The concealer shade you choose should be a close match for your skin tone. Skin tone can be broadly categorised into 4 shade families – fair, medium, tan and deep – with fair skin tones being the lightest and deep skin tones being the darkest. A good litmus test for this is to look at the 4 shades of my AIRbrush Flawless Finish pressed powder; whichever shade is the closest match to your skin tone will indicate which shade family you should be zooming into when choosing your concealer shade.
Knowing your skin tone is just the beginning, darlings. If you have a deep complexion, deep isn’t a singular shade – your skin tone might sit closer to tan, it may be extremely rich, or it may be somewhere in the middle. Always think of skin tone as a spectrum and compare multiple shades to uncover which is your best match. Each of my foundations are numbered ascending from fair to deep and grouped by skin tone; once you have identified your skin tone, look at each of the arm swatches in your shade family and decide which looks the most similar to your complexion.
Our skin is an amalgamation of different colours and knowing the ones that are prominent in your skin can help you identify an even closer shade match. While fair, medium, tan and deep are considered overtones, your skin also has undertones which influence its overall appearance. Each of my concealers is labelled as having a cool, warm or neutral undertone and choosing a concealer that matches the undertone of your skin will look more seamless. Here are some expert tips on how to find your skin’s undertone:
Warm undertones: skin appears yellow, golden, or peach, has green veins, and tans easily in the sun.
Neutral undertones: skin appears beige or olive, has a mixture of green and blue veins, and can catch a tan but is also prone to burning in the sun.
Cool undertones: skin appears red, pink, or blue, has blue or purple veins, and burns easily in the sun.
Yellow undertones: warm-toned skin with a hint of yellow
Golden undertones: warm-toned skin that looks naturally tanned with a hint of rich yellow
Peach undertones: warm-toned skin with a hint of pink
Olive undertones: neutral-toned skin with a hint of green
Neutral undertones: neutral-toned skin that’s not too warm or too cool
Red undertones: cool-toned skin with a red, pink or blueish tint
Makeup artists reach for concealer for multiple reasons with the main ones being to add coverage to give skin a flawless, poreless appearance and to cover the appearance of dark circles and blemishes. While foundations range from light to full coverage, concealers are created with the purpose of covering and concealing and generally range from medium to full coverage.
The most effective way to vanish the appearance of skin concerns is with a full coverage concealer like AIRbrush Flawless Blur Concealer with off-the-bat high coverage that looks flawless. How do you want your concealer to look, darlings? Before you choose your concealer shade, consider the effect that you want to create with makeup. To cover and conceal the look of dark circles, dark spots and redness, choose a shade of concealer that closely matches your skin tone to disguise their appearance while resembling your natural complexion. You can also use concealer to lift and brighten the look of your makeup; for brighter-looking under eyes and a facial framework that looks lifted and sculpted, try strategically applying a lighter shade of concealer under your eyes for a spotlight effect, and at your temples, the corners of your mouth and the hollows of your cheeks to create an upturned lift effect.
