What is Gua Sha?
Gua sha is a tool used in traditional Chinese medicine to massage the face and body. The name gua sha comes from the Chinese words gua “to scrape” and sha which refers to skin rashes and redness. Gua sha tools are commonly made with smooth stones such as quartz or jade that feel gentle and cool on skin. A gua sha is forged into a smooth-edged shape that resembles the contours of a face – the shape of a gua sha is extremely important because it enables the tool to hug areas of the face like the contours of the eye area, the underside of the cheekbones, and along the jawline. A traditional gua sha is crafted with a flat face that can be gently pressed onto skin; curved edges that mesh with the natural contours of areas like the cheekbones and jaw; and often have a more pronounced indentation that nestles comfortably around the nose and brow.
What Does Gua Sha Do?
Massaging your face and body with gua sha can have an array of skin benefits. Adding gua sha massage to your routine can contribute towards lifted and healthy looking skin, helping to relieve tension from your muscles, aid lymphatic drainage, calm the look of your complexion and reduce the appearance of puffiness. Following the contours of your face with gua sha and using upward motions can also help your facial architecture to appear more lifted and sculpted, defining the look of facial features and even reducing the appearance of fine lines. Gua sha can be used alone as an invigorating facial massage tool, or it can be used alongside your skincare to help boost absorption by working serums and creams into your skin.
