As the sunshine begins to peek through, we're eager to embrace the arrival of spring. Our bodies are emerging from a darker season and craving a boost after a tough winter. During this Nutrition and Hydration Week, here's a reminder to keep up with great nutrition to boost your energy and radiance, as well as looking after your hydration for overall better wellbeing.
Scientific research highlights the importance of a balanced diet in boosting the immune system. Getting enough nutrients, like vitamins and antioxidants, is key for preventing illnesses and staying healthy overall. With spring approaching, it's a great time to add more fresh produce to your meals to get essential nutrients.
I suggest choosing locally grown fruits and vegetables that are in season. Visiting your local farmer’s market is a great way to find a variety of fresh, locally sourced products, while supporting local farmers and reducing environmental impact. Adding colourful fruits and vegetables to your diet not only supports your microbiome and immune system, but according to a study may also promotes skin health, giving you a natural glow that reflects your overall well-being.
Proper hydration is essential for cognitive function, physical performance and overall health. Water plays a crucial role in various bodily functions, such as transporting nutrients, regulating body temperature, lubricating joints and preserving cardiovascular and cognitive performance. Research shows, that even a small reduction in hydration levels can adversely affect our cognitive function. The current recommendation in the UK is to drink six to eight glasses (1.5-2 litres) of water every day, potentially more if you're exercising or in hot weather.
Tailoring your hydration routine to your individual needs is vital for optimal wellbeing. Moreover, drinking more water as part of your diet might enhance skin hydration and how well your skin functions, particularly if you don't drink enough water daily.
If you struggle to drink sufficient water, try adding herbal teas and flavoured water to your daily routine for extra hydration and health perks. Mix and match different flavours until you find your favourite combination and enjoy staying refreshed and hydrated in a delicious way.
