Embracing motherhood: A holistic wellbeing journey for new mums

Discover how to Embrace Motherhood with Margareta Serfozo, Integrative Nutrition Health Coach @ The Endearing Project.

There are numerous paths to motherhood, but one thing is certain - it challenges and shapes us in ways we never imagined. Parenting can feel overwhelming, but it's crucial to take care of ourselves so we can be the best parents for our children. Here are my top tips to help you navigate through those busy moments.

Embracing motherhood

Nourish yourself

Try following a balanced diet by incorporating plenty of vegetables, healthy proteins and fibre. Simplify meal preparation by making easy tray dishes or hearty soups that can be enjoyed multiple times. Stay hydrated, especially if you're nursing, as adequate hydration is essential for overall well-being. Try spending time outside every day, even if it's just for a short walk with your baby. Research shows that going outside for just twenty minutes every day can make you feel better emotionally and mentally. It's an easy way to lift your mood.

Give yourself a break

Give yourself permission to take a break – you deserve it. Motherhood is undeniably challenging and we often set unrealistic expectations for ourselves. Take a moment to sit down, savour a cup of tea and take some deep breaths to soothe your nervous system. Indulge in some self-care by treating yourself to a new skincare routine or pampering yourself with an at-home facial. Prioritise sleep and rest whenever possible, even if it's just a brief nap on the sofa. The dishes can wait; your well-being comes first.

Nurture connections, especially the one with yourself

Remember to regularly check in with yourself and ask for help when needed to ensure you're taking care of your own well-being. Don't hesitate to lean on friends and family for emotional support or assistance with baby care and meal preparation. Opening up about your challenges can strengthen relationships and bring you closer to loved ones. Try connecting with other new moms by joining local baby or exercise classes. While making new friendships as an adult can feel daunting, this period of your life will call you to step out of your comfort zone many times.

Becoming a mother changes your life in many ways. It's important to take care of yourself and prioritise your needs. Make sure you eat well, stay hydrated and get out of the house for some fresh air. Reach out to your friends for support when you need it. Remember, parenting is a learning experience, so it's okay if things aren't perfect. Enjoy the journey and Happy Mother's Day!
